Desktop Virtualization and the Cloud

I am sitting in on a presentation at Microsoft TechEd by two colleagues of mine from Microsoft and Dell regarding Microsoft RDS and cloud computing, and my mind begins to wonder with excitement. The basic concept of their presentation is an explanation of how RDS can be deployed in different cloud type environments: on-premise, hybrid cloud and cloud. At this point, if you are as geeky as me, you can probably see why I get excited. This concept of blurring the lines of where enterprise applications can reside is amazing. Considering I am a long time server based computing guy, this is the evolution of technology that I cant get enough of. Freek Berson, a brilliant Microsoft MVP, has already shown how feasible it is to scale RDS in Azure. Microsoft has announced RemoteApp in Azure here at TechEd.  Citrix has also previously announced their Workspace Services which allows you to run their management nodes in the cloud and manage your desktops and applications from the cloud.  All of these things show continued trends of desktop virtualization computing shifting capabilities to the cloud. I am happy to be in a position at Dell to leverage this momentum and hopefully drive some really cool solutions to be consumed by our customers.
