I decided to break from my normal enterprise solution type posts and write about something that keeps me up at night (that and I have been working on some projects that I cant divulge right now). I constantly find that when I actually have time to myself, which is rare between my family and my job, I am brainstorming about new technology ideas. Some times this thought process starts as "wouldn't it be cool if" and other times it begins with thinking about a problem I have encountered or have understood from others. The other day I listened to a radio report on NPR about the projected worsening of traffic issues in Austin as the population increases, and immediately thought about how I could solve that with technology.
One of the reasons I joined my current team at Dell, after the company I worked for was acquired, was because I wanted to do more innovative work. That desire has continued almost a year later and, in my opinion, has accelerated greatly. We are working on really great things, but for some reason my appetite for ideation and innovation is not satisfied. I think this is mostly because I have certain constraints associated with my projects. Hopefully my need to ideate will be fostered further as I progress. Our maybe I will finally take that leap to start my own company.
What drives you? When do you do your best brainstorming? I'd love to here from others that have the same hunger for pie in the sky thinking.
