Hyperconverged goes in the shiny box

If any of you were fans of the TV show "Malcolm in the Middle" then you may get the pop culture reference in title. If not, you can watch the episode titled "Experiment" in season 5. The short of it is Reese is trying to remember what he did that accidentally separated two bases for an enzyme. At one point he nonchalantly mentions that he found something shiny and put it in his shiny box. That's what the concept of hyperconverged is today. It's a new shiny object that everyone wants to put in their shiny box, but for good reason.

In legacy data center configurations, compute and storage resources usually scale at different rates, and can be complex to deploy and manage. All that was fine, and we dealt with it, because we had no other choice. But now, there are new options. We saw legacy data center options evolve into converged infrastructure, which allowed for a much greater integrated solution to deploy. This begot the hyperconverged solution. A fully integrated and simple data center component for provisioning a plethora of workloads and facilitating a grand number of use cases.

With the arrival of 2015, comes the predictions that hyperconverged solutions are going to be a significant for in the data center evolution journey. Several analysts have recognized hyperconverged as an independent space where previously it was included in the converged moniker. As you can see below, IDC has put the stake in the ground with their identification of the players in the hyperconverged space. It will be interesting to see how this graphic changes in 2016 and beyond.
