VDI Appliance for SMB

You may or may not have seen the latest announcements from Dell regarding VDI appliances targeted for the small to medium businesses. One was for the vWorkspace version and another for the Citrix XenDesktop version. Not surprisingly, these are getting plenty of media attention. eWeek did a nice write up here and here.

If you remember from my last post, I hinted at the next project I was working on. Well, this is that very project. The team and I have spent quite a bit of time trying to figure out exactly what would make a difference to our customers and we believe we found it. The basic premise is that we designed a utility to deploy VDI for the administrator and packaged everything you need on one server.

For anyone that has deployed desktop virtualization, you know that it is not a simple task. You have to install and configure the hypervisor. Then you have to create a set of virtual machines for the broker and management software. Then you have to install and configuration the broker and management software. Then you have to create a golden image for the end users. Then you have to configure and deploy a pool based upon the golden image. When it its all said and done, you will have spent quite a bit of time, even if you are an expert.

With the Dell Appliance for Wyse (that's the official name), we've eliminated almost all of the manual time normally spent deploying a VDI solution. You simply run through a configuration utility on first boot. Once completed, you will have a fully configured VDI server for end users to access.

Its really that simple. No more spending hours doing 300+ manual tasks to deploy VDI. You can better spend your time doing other, more important tasks. Like trying to figure out where those pesky files went.

That's all the details I can post for now. I'll provide more once I get the official, non-NDA approved slide deck. Until then, enjoy this video of some "computer experts".

Update:
I thought I would leave this little crumb...
